An Compassion of Strangers: The Way a Person I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Secure the Position That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to Europe with a companion. Since my companion was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had arranged a two-week stay there en route to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a big 10-storey building on the UWS known as International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we got some food, took a seat, and began chatting with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did, and I shared that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – close to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I should apply for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that evening. The man from Iraq walked over to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off told my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where opportunities abound – she responded: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his full name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I lacked the courage or self-belief to approach someone at an prestigious college and request employment. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university led me to a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I now have a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
