The English along with Welsh Placed in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by sporting icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales find themselves placed in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a highly-anticipated early encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their infamous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the English team's shock early exit.

Key Group Pairings

Ireland and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they secured a convincing win, with Scotland unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each impressed as underdogs in France, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and world number one South Africa before the final, presuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the pools conclude according to the current world rankings, other top favourites like New Zealand and France would remain separated from both England and Ireland until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
