Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
